Lesson 2: Choosing and Narrowing Your Topic

Completion requirements
  • Objective: Select and refine a topic for your argumentative essay.
  • Instructions:
    1. Review your list of potential topics. Choose one that interests you and has enough available evidence for research.
    2. Narrow your topic to make it more focused. For example, instead of "climate change," narrow it down to "Should schools implement environmental education to address climate change?"
    3. Write a brief statement of your claim (your position on the topic). For example, "I believe schools should implement environmental education to help students understand the effects of climate change."
    4. Research your topic: Gather at least three sources (articles, reports, studies, etc.) that provide evidence for your argument.
