Lesson 2: Choosing and Narrowing Your Topic
Completion requirements
- Objective: Select and refine a topic for your argumentative essay.
- Instructions:
- Review your list of potential topics. Choose one that interests you and has enough available evidence for research.
- Narrow your topic to make it more focused. For example, instead of "climate change," narrow it down to "Should schools implement environmental education to address climate change?"
- Write a brief statement of your claim (your position on the topic). For example, "I believe schools should implement environmental education to help students understand the effects of climate change."
- Research your topic: Gather at least three sources (articles, reports, studies, etc.) that provide evidence for your argument.
