Holistic Week – Fermentation

Purpose and Description of the Holistic Learning Experience

The Vineyard

An example of one of our holistic learning experiences began with an enriching visit to a local vineyard, where students gained firsthand knowledge about the cultivation, sorting, and preparation of grapes for fermentation. This immersive experience served as a springboard for interdisciplinary exploration across various subjects, allowing students to connect theoretical concepts with practical applications.

Physical Education and Nutrition

In the Physical Education & Nutrition Course, students delved into the benefits and disadvantages of alcohol consumption concerning physical fitness and nutrition. They engaged in discussions about responsible drinking and the impact of alcohol on health, fostering a nuanced understanding of lifestyle choices.

Science!

The Biology & Chemistry Courses focused on the science of fermentation, emphasizing its critical role in preserving food. Students conducted an experiment to produce vinegar, thereby solidifying their understanding of chemical processes and the biological significance of fermentation in food production.

Art History

In the Art History Course, students explored artistic symbols and cultural influences within the Mediterranean region. They examined archaeological findings related to wine and wine vessels in Georgia and discussed the wine culture of Ancient Greece, including representations of Dionysus in frescoes and amphorae. Additionally, they analyzed the influence of wine on Roman culture, looking at etiquette and status symbols, and appreciated the aesthetics of wine ware from various cultures, including Persian and Tang Dynasty Chinese pottery.

World History

Finally, in the World History Course, students investigated the trade of fermented goods along the Silk Road and other ancient trading routes. They examined the cultural significance of these goods in religious events and social gatherings, recognizing the historical importance of fermentation in global trade and social practices.

This holistic learning experience successfully bridged academic subjects, fostering a deeper understanding of the interconnections between agriculture, health, business, science, art, and history, all centered around the theme of wine and fermentation.
